Hailing from Northern California, Lakes operates under the direction of vocalist and guitarist Seth Alan Roberts, who previously played in the Christian indie rock outfit Watashi Wa. That group issued a Tooth & Nail release prior to its dissolution in summer 2004. Roberts subsequently assembled Eager Seas and delivered another Tooth & Nail project, though the material surfaced under the Watashi Wa name in early 2006. Once the label relationship ended, Roberts joined guitarist Jason Massey and bassist Roger Tompkins to ink a deal with The Militia Group, at which point the ensemble adopted the name Lakes. The resulting debut EP Photographs arrived in September 2006, performed by Erik Brunner on bass and Jonathan Russo behind the drums, and included guest appearances from Mike Herrera of MxPx alongside Aaron Marsh of Copeland. Four years passed before the group unveiled its first full-length album, The Agreement, in 2010. Operating autonomously through their own Armacost Records imprint, Lakes proceeded deliberately, devoting extended effort to the composition and tracking of the follow-up Fire Ahead, which surfaced during summer 2014.
