Biography
Blending Spanish lyrics into punk, alternative rock and ska placed las 15 Letras among the Mexican-American groups that surfaced from L.A.’s rock en español circuit in the 1990s. Founded in 1993, the band took its name from a Mexican historical episode in which freedom fighter Pancho Villa shot a traitor outside a bar called las 15 Letras, Spanish for the 15 Letters. Shows began that year throughout Southern California, soon building a modest underground audience for the group’s driving yet melodic material. The independent Sindiskera label issued the band’s promising debut Golosinas in 1997, when the roster comprised singer Roberto Negrete—who recalls John Lydon, although every vocal on Golosinas is delivered in Spanish—guitarist Martin Sanchez, bassist Abel Sanchez, saxophonist Edgar Briones and drummer Jorge Briones.
