Last of the Juanitas

Origin: U.S.A
Listen on Coda
Supposedly deriving their moniker from a bottle of hot sauce, this instrumental trio fuses math rock with alternative metal. Their sound merges weighty sludge and abrupt shifts with melodic passages, suggesting a collision between the Melvins and Drive Like Jehu—the latter’s former guitarist, Rick Fork, even contributed to the debut record. Emerging around 1998 amid the Arizona desert, the outfit first moved to San Diego before ultimately basing itself in Portland. The Last of the Juanitas have issued two full-length albums through Flapping Jet Records along with several 7" singles. Drummer John Schier also performs with the Portland-based Cosmos Group.
