Biography
Hailing from Mountain View, California, blues guitarist Laura Chavez maintains a distinctive playing style and sonic identity, even though comparisons have often been drawn to figures spanning Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddie King. Her approach draws deeply from the complete range of Texas and Chicago blues traditions, extending from their classic periods through to present-day expressions, while also absorbing influences from rock & roll guitarists including Jimmy Page and Mick Taylor.
At age 18 Chavez joined the ensemble of singer and songwriter Lara Price, remaining for eight years and using that period to tour widely while partnering with numerous additional blues performers. She simultaneously assembled her own group and entered the worldwide blues circuit, appearing onstage with artists ranging from Bob Margolin to Rene Solis.
Late in 2008 singer and songwriter Candye Kane, seeking a permanent lead guitarist, turned to Sue Foley for suggestions. Foley immediately named Chavez, and Kane placed such trust in that recommendation that she engaged Chavez without an audition or prior introduction.
Chavez first recorded with Kane on the 2009 album Superhero, serving as lead guitarist and co-producer. The two developed a tight working relationship, with Chavez taking the position of musical director for Kane’s band on the 2011 album Sister Vagabond, whose cover carried the credit “featuring Laura Chavez.” The identical billing appeared on the 2013 release Come Out Swingin’.
