After relocating to Gainesville, Florida, Laura Minor launched her musical journey upon encountering singer/songwriter Jared Flamm. Having viewed herself primarily as a dedicated author, she had initially arrived in the city intending to focus on completing a book project. However, their joint performance of Gram Parsons' "Return of the Grievous Angel" during an April 2001 gathering sparked the transformation of her literary works, especially poems, into musical compositions. This shift prompted her to embrace a performing identity, leading quickly to a recording contract with HighTone Records. For her first release, Salesman's Girl (2002), she collaborated with David Lowery of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, who handled production duties, alongside engineer Brian Paulson, known for his work with Beck and Uncle Tupelo. The resulting effort blends rock and country elements while incorporating tracks that draw directly from her Florida upbringing.
