Biography
Growing up amid the vibrant sounds of New York City's Lower East Side, singer/songwriter Laura Wolfe absorbed music from every direction. Her mother worked as a classical pianist and conductor, while her father belonged to the Weathermen, the controversial political group that gained notoriety in the late '60s and early '70s. Wolfe began studying piano and violin at age seven and picked up guitar by the time she turned 13. As a voice student at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, she distinguished herself in the school's gospel choir, where her solos appear on Lavender Light Gospel Choir's Light in the House album. She later attended Oberlin College, completing a bachelor's degree in original performance, and appeared in the European road production of the Broadway favorite Hair. Wolfe also issued two independent projects on her own: a self-titled four-song demo and the live recording The Voice Box. Her first full-length release, the ten-song Siren, arrived in 2005 under the guidance of producer Steve Addabbo (Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega).
