Biography
Operating out of Los Angeles, Lauren Bousfield works as a composer, sound designer, and electronic musician. Recognition first arrived through her Nero's Day at Disneyland endeavor, where breakcore, synth-punk, and circus-like melodies combined across densely layered recordings, among them the 2009 release From Rotting Fantasylands. From 2012 onward she has issued material under her own name, adding increased vocals and stronger pop leanings across albums such as the 2020 effort Palimpsest and the 2023 set Salesforce while also scoring projects for television, film, and video games.
Raised in Oakland, California, she performed during the late 1990s and early 2000s in the synth-punk outfit Beautiful Mutants before launching Nero's Day at Disneyland in 2005 alongside Shon Koperweis. That same year saw the appearance of the debut album Attention Shoppers together with the digital EP Grievances and Dead Malls, followed in 2007 by the EP Colonists. The project contributed material to Deathbomb Arc's nine-disc compilation The Fruit Will Rot, Vol. 3, which highlighted intersections between beat-driven electronic music and the noise community. She additionally handled keyboards for the noise-punk band Strip Mall Seizures. In 2008 Nero's Day joined Jason Forrest's Cock Rock Disco roster, delivered a remix of the single "Rock Rock Rock" issued under his DJ Donna Summer guise, and created the mash-up album Trickle Down Economixxx. The full-length From Rotting Fantasylands arrived in 2009 and steadily built an underground cult audience. Further tracks and remixes followed, including the 2010 collaboration "Bent Chorals" with Mincemeat or Tenspeed, before the project disbanded in 2011 for reasons that remained private.
Bousfield publicly came out as transgender and began releasing music under her own name, opening with the 2012 EP Locked into Phantasy. The full-length Avalon Vales followed in 2013. Six singles appeared in January 2016, succeeded that July by Namazu Running, her score for the physics-based puzzle game Nebulous. She also served as technical assistant at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions on the scores for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Inferno. After surviving an apartment fire that caused third-degree burns, she issued the 2017 EP Fire Songs, additionally dedicated to victims of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. The same year brought the release of the collaboration "Used to Be Better" with Girls Rituals, also known as Devi McCallion.
Bousfield and her wife Naomi Mitchell established In-House Pharmacy in 2018 and together produced an alternate score for the 1989 cyberpunk horror classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man. The pair hosted the synth-themed talk show Low Pass Gays on Dublab and released the EP We Are Electronics and Piano Only in May 2020. Her solo album Palimpsest came out via Deathbomb Arc that July. Appearances followed on Backxwash's I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses in 2021 and on clipping.'s EP Remxng 2.1 in 2022. Salesforce, extending her ongoing exploration of consumer culture critique, appeared on Orange Milk in 2023.
