Biography
LaWanda Page, the comedienne remembered primarily for portraying the irritable Aunt Esther in the classic sitcom Sanford and Son, entered the world in Cleveland, Ohio, during 1920. Her professional dancing pursuits commenced at the age of fifteen, after which she moved to St. Louis and took up employment as a waitress in Ned Love's Tavern. It was there that she ventured into stripping, weaving in fire-swallowing feats reminiscent of circus sideshows, which led to her being dubbed "The Bronze Goddess of Fire." During her time in St. Louis, she crossed paths with Redd Foxx, a local comedian, and the pair subsequently toured the "chitlin circuit" comprising black-owned nightspots.
In 1955, Page established herself in Los Angeles, where she initiated her standup performances at the Brass Rail club. She later became part of the comedy ensemble Skillet, Leroy & Co. Her appearance at the Persian Room in Los Angeles caught the attention of producers scouting for the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, which was intended as a showcase for her longtime associate and collaborator, Foxx. The show debuted in 1972 and emerged as a major success of that period. Following the conclusion of Sanford and Son in 1977, she took a role in the brief series Detective School and made numerous guest appearances across television programs alongside several film cameos. Among her standup albums are Mutha Is Half a Word and Watch It, Sucker.
