Biography
Baltimore, Maryland singer/songwriter Lawrence Lanahan devoted a full decade to musical study before launching his own performing career at age 29. His early explorations included college DJ sets, jazz lessons under guitarist Carl Filipiak, research for the master's thesis "The Social Meaning of Musical Improvisation," direction of an after-school music program for children, and membership in the jazz-funk band Juicebox, all of which broadened his sonic palette. In 2002 he concluded the time had come to concentrate on songwriting. Appearances at venues across Baltimore drew positive notices and drew parallels to Mason Jennings, Elliott Smith, and Bruce Cockburn. Lanahan issued his debut, self-titled EP in June of 2004.
