An American baritone named Tibbett launched his professional path through acting, church performances, and appearances in light operas. Training with La Forge and Ruysdael opened the door to his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1923. Acclaim arrived with his 1925 portrayal of Ford in Falstaff, where he surpassed Scotti in the title role. He later assumed Scotti’s place as the company’s lead interpreter of Italian parts, holding that position for 27 seasons. He also enjoyed success as a film and stage actor while performing on American radio in its formative years.
