Biography
Lazaro Ros stands out as the preeminent akypwon, or principal vocalist, within the Afro-Cuban practices of LA Regla de Ocho, a tradition grounded in Yoruba culture. As a founding member of Conjunto Folklorico Nacional, originally established as the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba, he has sustained his work in the akypwon idiom through numerous artistic outlets. Along with issuing three memorable solo albums, he has worked with the National Ballet of Cuba, saxophonist/composer Lucia Hergo, and Cuban pop band Mezcla. Ros has also written numerous scores for theatrical productions and films such as Maria Antonia. Raised in conditions of extreme poverty, he earned his living as a cook and shopkeeper. After his 1950 initiation into La Regla de Ocho, he absorbed many songs from the repertoire of master singer Eugenio de la Rosa. In 1997 Ros stated that his United States tour would bring his concert career to a close.
