Lazarus Clamp operates as an indie rock outfit split between bases in Leicester and London, England. From the outset the group has sought to move beyond repeated associations with various guitar-driven acts, most often Hood, Slint, and Yo La Tengo. Guitarists and vocalists Michael and Andrew launched the project in 1994 after crossing paths at a Rodan concert. Bassist Kim and drummer Mark completed the initial lineup, and the four musicians played scattered regional shows throughout the following years. Their earliest official appearance arrived on the 1995 Sorted compilation Ashtray Heart. Two self-released cassette-only recordings, Usually Dry-Eyed and Excavator, surfaced soon afterward. Personnel shifts followed in short order: Huw replaced Mark on drums, George took over from Kim on bass, and violinist Tom entered the fold. Additional compilation tracks and a run of singles preceded the band’s first proper album, Such as You Are and Still Not Seeming to Mind, assembled from assorted studio sessions and home recordings. Their second full-length effort, The More We Are the Funnier It Is, appeared in 2001.
