Biography
Panamanian salsa vocalist Leo Almengor never set out with ambitions to build a reputation through song. Early visibility arrived instead via modeling and acting, where he logged appearances in over fifty commercials before turning thirteen. The sole musical influence during his formative years came from his brother, whose own singing habit often brought him along to Leo’s professional bookings. In his teenage years Leo connected with producers Lali Carrizo and David Choy, both of whom urged him to pursue singing professionally. Prompted by their encouragement, he began entering talent contests; those auditions in turn opened doors to recording jingles. Greater vocal experience soon translated into live-performance offers, one of which placed him in the coro of Johnny Rivera’s band. Demonstrating both reliability and commanding stage presence, Almengor attracted further invitations to collaborate with leading salsa figures including Maelo Ruiz and Ismael Miranda. While supporting those established bandleaders he assembled his own material and traveled to Puerto Rico to lay down tracks for a debut solo project. The independent label that had committed to the sessions folded, leaving the finished salsa album unreleased. Disappointed, Almengor shifted direction dramatically and spent the next year and a half preparing a collection rooted in ballads and pop. Sony Music ultimately acquired and issued that recording, titled Historia de 2. Leo then toured Central America in support, sharing bills with Chayanne and Victor Manuelle. His role in the telenovela Vivimos un Secreto broadened his profile across Latin America and gave his music wider exposure.
