Biography
Songwriter Lee Garrett lent his pen to Stevie Wonder's chart-topping R&B single "Signed, Sealed and Delivered I'm Yours," the Wonder-produced R&B number one "Let's Get Serious" for Jermaine Jackson, and The Spinners' "It's a Shame." His career path also featured a term as music director at the Philadelphia soul music radio station WHAT plus regular nightclub performances. Garrett encountered Wonder for the first time at the Michigan School for the Blind, after which the pair launched a songwriting partnership whose earliest result was the Spinners' 1968 Motown number four R&B hit "It's a Shame." Credited to Garrett, Wonder, Syreeta Wright—who scored a Motown number four pop hit duet with Billy Preston, "With You I'm Born Again"—and Lula Mae Hardaway, "Signed, Sealed and Delivered I'm Yours" ruled the R&B listings for six weeks and reached number three pop on Billboard's charts in summer 1970. The Signed, Sealed Delivered I'm Yours LP climbed to number 25 pop in fall 1970.
Garrett joined the Chrysalis roster in 1976 and scored a moderate R&B hit with "You're My Everything," drawn from his sole solo album, Heat for the Feets. Reuniting with Stevie Wonder, he supplied the kinetic "Let's Get Serious" for Jermaine Jackson, which held the number one R&B position for six weeks and reached number nine pop in spring 1980. The Let's Get Serious album attained gold certification and peaked at number six pop in summer 1980.
