Emerging in the late 1970s as a little-known hard rock and heavy metal outfit, Legs Diamond began when bass player Michael Diamond and drummer Jeff Poole, both originally from the San Francisco area, moved to Los Angeles. There they recruited vocalist Rick Sanford, guitarist Roger Romeo, and keyboardist/guitarist Mike Prince, securing a deal with Mercury. The year 1977 brought two Mercury albums, the self-titled debut and A Diamond Is a Hard Rock. Although the band backed both releases with arena shows supporting major acts including Styx, Ted Nugent, and Kiss, neither album registered on the charts. After moving to the independent Cream label the following year, the group delivered its third album overall, Fire Power, a more mainstream effort intended to achieve commercial breakthrough. The strategy failed when the record fared even worse than its predecessors, prompting the band to disband soon afterward. Sanford, Romeo, and Prince reactivated Legs Diamond in 1984, adding drummer Dusty Watson and bassist Mike Christie, and released several overlooked albums: Out on Bail in 1984, Land of the Gun in 1986, and Town Bad Girl in 1990 before dissolving once more. The band resurfaced again in 2001 with the new album The Wish.
