On May 31, 1936, Lemuel Jones produced a pair of field recordings for John Lomax inside the state penitentiary in Richmond, VA. Delivering his parts without accompaniment, Jones voiced the Depression-era protest song "Po' Farmers (Poor Farmers)" and the blues number "Shake It, Mama." He further joined a unison vocal ensemble that supported fellow inmate James Wilson on the call-and-response work song "Can't You Line 'Em," which Lomax captured the same day.
