Biography
Lenny Smith, the singer and songwriter chiefly recognized for composing the modern gospel classic "Our God Reigns," has attained renewed visibility owing to the ascent of his offspring's contributions inside the fiercely experimental Danielson Famile. Smith first took up songwriting during his time as a seminary student at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, where he found motivation in the liturgical pieces and "folk masses" surrounding him and developed a particular fascination with setting scripture to melody. Publishers showed scant interest in his material, however, until traveling evangelists began championing "Our God Reigns," after which the composition's renown extended worldwide. After trading Latin instruction for house painting, Smith emerged as a highly productive creator credited with more than 160 songs. His debut album, issued when he reached 58, arrived in 2001 under the title Deep Calls to Deep and presented an eclectic assortment of rock-infused gospel that bore little surface resemblance to his children's music yet conveyed an equally intense, albeit differently expressed, spiritual passion.
