Biography
Lenny White stands out as a drummer of remarkable range, yet his greatest renown still stems from his role in Chick Corea’s Return To Forever throughout the 1970s. Largely self-taught, he entered the scene at its upper levels, performing often alongside Jackie McLean in 1968 and contributing to Miles Davis’s landmark 1969 album “Bitches Brew.” Before long he was collaborating with an elite roster of jazz figures that encompassed Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke, and Stan Getz. While serving in Return To Forever from 1973 to 1976, he earned widespread acclaim as a leading fusion drummer, though his adaptability allowed him to thrive across numerous musical contexts. Following the group’s dissolution, he led multiple fusion ventures whose Nemperor and Elektra releases, centered on commercial funk, have aged less favorably; by contrast, his contributions to the all-star ensembles Echoes Of An Era and Griffith Park proved more enduring, and he has remained a sought-after sideman across an extensive array of projects.
