Biography
Leo Rowsome shaped the development of traditional Irish music in significant ways. As the third in a line of family pipers, he stood out among the limited number of professional musicians active throughout Ireland during the 1930s and 1940s. Having instructed students on uillean pipes at Dublin's Municipal School of Music beginning in 1920, he claimed top honors at the Dublin Feis Ceoil the following year. Serving as inaugural leader of the Pipers Club, Rowsome collaborated with sibling Tom to establish Cumann Ceoltoiri Eirann during January 1950, an entity that later transformed into Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eirann by 1952.
