Biography
Emerging as something of an enigmatic presence within Chicago’s house-music underground, LeRon Carson crafted lean yet deeply expressive cuts on minimal equipment by layering takes directly onto cassette. Nearly everything he committed to tape dates from the late 1980s, when he was still a teenager, though the material surfaced only years afterward on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature imprint. The resulting pieces move between sparse, introspective house and raw disco loops reminiscent of the style Moodymann and Parrish himself would later popularize in Detroit from the 1990s onward. Carson’s first singles and EPs began appearing in 2001; the posthumous album Under the Conditions followed in 2021.
Public details about his life remain scarce, yet it is established that he lived on Chicago’s South Side and drew several track titles from neighborhood landmarks. Acquaintances recall that he spent nearly every moment recording or mixing and consistently maximized whatever limited gear he had at hand. He shared a close friendship with Theo Parrish, another Chicago native; the pair began making music together in the closing years of the 1980s while both were still adolescents. Parrish included one Carson recording on the 2001 release The 1987 EP, a split that documented work from that exact year. Carson’s debut full EP, Red Lightbulb Theory ’87-’88, arrived in 2009 after engineering by Omar-S at Detroit’s FXHE Studios. In 2014 he issued Tracks from the Tape, a two-track collaboration with Dion Wilson, better known as the hip-hop producer No I.D. Carson died on January 16, 2016, just prior to the appearance of the Lemonlime 12". Sound Signature then issued Under the Conditions in 2021 as his first complete album; the double-CD version gathered every previously released Carson track plus one previously unissued cut.
