Montreal witnessed the 1962 formation of the Specialtones—subsequently renamed Les Classels—by five school friends: Michel Caron, Jean-Clement Drouin, Serge Drouin, Gilles Gerard, and Pierre Therrien. The members bleached their hair white, dressed entirely in white, and performed on white instruments in an effort to stand out. Their 1964 single "Avant de Me Dire Adieu" topped the Quebec charts, quickly elevating the quintet to local stardom, yet the group's reach stayed limited to French Canada.
