In the early 1970s Englishman Les Humphries put together the Les Humphries Singers in Berlin. The ensemble mixed gospel, R&B, pop, and rock in a style comparable to the sound that would later elevate Boney M to European superstardom. Their most successful releases were the 1972 single “Mexico” and the 1973 single “Mama Loo.” The group also served as Germany’s entry in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest, yet disbanded not long afterward. A short-lived reunion took place in 1991. By 2006 many of the original lineup, absent Les Humphries, had regrouped as the Original Singers. Liz Mitchell later fronted Boney M while John Lawton became the lead singer of Uriah Heep; Les Humphries himself died in December 2007.
