Biography
British rapper Lesane blends emo-trap, punk, and R&B into an experimental style. Early singles such as the 2020 release “Don’t Do Drugs” and the 2021 track “HOUDINI” announced his willingness to disregard conventional hip-hop boundaries, a direction that crystallized on his first full-length project, the punk-infused GENRELESS, which appeared in 2022.
Raised in Handsworth, a suburb of Birmingham, England, Lesane absorbed the music of 2Pac, Michael Jackson, and Chief Keef during his formative years. After leaving school at fourteen, he devoted himself to production and rapping. Relocating to New York broadened his palette; drawing from XXXTentacion, Lil Peep, and Trippie Redd, he began issuing his own confessional rap material. A series of 2019 singles that included “Camp Fires” and “Sticks & Stones” gave way to further experimentation, most notably the pop-punk-infused “Don’t Do Drugs” in 2020. Concentrating on this new trajectory, he spent the following year shaping his debut album, previewed by the 2021 single “HOUDINI.” Additional tracks throughout 2022 preceded the late-year arrival of GENRELESS, an album that fused pop-punk, trap, and R&B into a distinctive personal aesthetic.
