Biography
From the age of six Leslie Baker devoted herself to music studies and took up the acoustic bass, eventually becoming a longstanding presence on the Los Angeles scene. She landed her first paid engagement at twelve and has long regarded Red Callender as her foremost instructor and chief mentor. Her extensive résumé of jazz and blues collaborators encompasses the L.A. Jazz Society All-Stars, Barbara Morrison, Floyd Dixon—three artists with whom she has also recorded—Willie Dixon, Bill Doggett, Earl Palmer, Gerald Wiggins, Buddy Collette, Oscar Brown Jr., the Cheathams, Ray Pizzi, Bill Henderson and numerous others. In 1998 she issued her first album as a leader, Askew, on the Ranch Cabin label.
