Biography
His musical education took shape through studies with Ross Lee Finney, Nadia Boulanger, Arthur Honegger, and Roberto Gerhard. He later held the Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music post at the University of Michigan. The Pulitzer Prize in Music went to him for Variations for Orchestra, one among many awards and commissions he received.
