Biography
Darren Cunningham operates under multiple guises, among them Actress and GNESIS, and employs Levantis as yet another vehicle for his idiosyncratic, distorted strain of techno. The project surfaced for the first time in 2013, the interval separating the Actress albums R.I.P. and Ghettoville, when Cunningham issued the Believe EP on Trilogy Tapes. Relative to the Actress material released directly before and after that year, Believe adopted a more linear stance, its cuts anchored by unwavering bass-drum pulses, yet it preserved the same cerebral intensity that defines Cunningham’s output. Two years later, following what seemed to be the last Actress album, he resumed the Levantis name with Romantic Psychology, Vol. 1. The Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolour released the collection, a modestly expanded set composed largely of concise, atmospheric pieces.
