In the early 2000s, Lewis & Clarke took form amid the countryside of Pennsylvania as songwriter Lou Rogai's slowcore endeavor apart from his main work. Rogai, previously active as a solo artist, had already gained notice through the 2000 release of his well-received EP Empty Throne. Operating under the Lewis & Clarke name, he enlisted multiple collaborators in a lineup that changed frequently, and this configuration first captured its gentle, lo-fi intimacy on the independently issued Bright Light EP. The 2003 release presented an Americana style that drew parallels to Codeine and Giant Sand.

European audiences encountered the full-length Bare Bones and Branches later that same year, while American listeners received it in 2005. Rogai next turned his attention to 2007's Blasts of Holy Birth, an album that explored connections between spring and birth.
