Biography
Lewis Pragasam earned widespread acclaim as a drummer and percussionist throughout Asia and beyond. He established and led Asiabeat, an ensemble pivotal in exposing Asian percussion traditions and their fusions with global musical forms to international listeners. Founded in 1979, the collective issued its initial recordings in 1982, earning strong acclaim. Pragasam subsequently guided the ensemble across continents, performing at premier jazz and world music events worldwide. He received a Fulbright Scholarship and served as Artist in Residence at East Carolina University. Additionally, he traveled extensively with his percussion ensemble Trash. On December 18, 2023, Lewis Pragasam passed away at age 66.
