Biography
Lex de Azevedo brings together an unusual breadth of musical skills, functioning as composer, pianist, conductor, singer, and additional roles. Within the Latter-Day Saint community he earned particular distinction through the musical Saturday's Warrior. His professional path nevertheless opened in Hollywood, where he worked as musical director for series such as The Sonny & Cher Show, Michael Jackson & the Jackson Five, and The Osmonds. He supplied original scores for the films Where the Red Fern Grows and Swan Princess, and he wrote five Broadway-style musicals that included Saturday's Warrior. Many episodes of Bible Stories and American Hero Classics carry his scoring, as do hundreds of commercials.
He released numerous albums showcasing his own performances that move from jazz stylings to neo-classical works. Two Golden Globe nominations acknowledged his output, and two recordings reached gold-record status. He has served as guest conductor for several orchestras and symphonies, among them the London National Philharmonic.
With the appearance of Gloria: The Life of Christ, the first installment of two projected volumes, de Azevedo directed his efforts more visibly toward the creation of a large-scale oratorio; he both recorded an album with Millennium and presented the work live for a video that aired on the Odyssey Channel in December 1999.
A descendant of the well-known Latter-Day Saint musical family the Kings, de Azevedo had a mother who belonged to the King Sisters troupe, and the same aptitude has continued through him and his children. He shares his musical activities with his wife Peggy and their offspring, most prominently Julie, who has issued five albums of her own. He and his wife make their home in Salt Lake City, UT.
