Liam Hayes gained recognition primarily through his Chicago-based retro-pop endeavor known as Plush, in addition to collaborating with Palace led by Will Oldham and pursuing film scoring during the 2010s. Although his musical endeavors under the Plush moniker commenced in the early 1990s, the initial full-length release More You Becomes You emerged in 1998, showcasing minimalist piano-driven ballads reminiscent of the styles of Burt Bacharach and Carole King. He followed up four years afterward with Fed, an expansive work rooted in orchestral pop. Credited to Liam Hayes and Plush, the 2009 album Bright Penny represented his effort to create a tribute to pop music, harmonizing the contrasting approaches evident in prior efforts. For the 2012 motion picture A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III directed by Roman Coppola, which delved into the colorful fantasies and amorous affairs of a 1970s graphic designer, Hayes both composed original pieces and selected existing material from the Plush catalog. His involvement extended to an on-screen role in the movie, mirroring his earlier brief appearance in the 2000 feature High Fidelity. The subsequent Liam Hayes and Plush project Korp Sole Roller, released in 2014, incorporated elements of 1970s glam rock. After joining former Girls vocalist Christopher Owens on tour, he issued the comparatively minimalist Slurrup during January 2015.
