Biography
During the belle époque, Licas ranked among the foremost instrumentalists shaping carioca choro, frequently joining forces with contemporaries such as Anacleto de Medeiros, Irineu de Almeida, Pedro Augusto, Luís de Sousa, Candinho Trombone, Cupertino, Catulo da Paixão Cearense, Mário Cavaquinho, Sátiro Bilhar, and others. Peers viewed him as a leading exponent of the style, which brought regular calls to perform at the period’s celebrated choros—the term also applied to the gatherings themselves. His gentle touch and refined precision in echoing violão baixarias on a demanding instrument drew consistent praise. A flutist as well, he belonged to the celebrated Banda do Corpo de Bombeiros, led by his close friend Anacleto de Medeiros.
