Originating from Hull in the United Kingdom, the post-punk group Life confronts listeners both sonically and through outspoken political stances, harnessing high-voltage, jagged punk energy to target widespread societal problems.
Mez and Mick Sanders, who are brothers, first performed together in the Neat before that group collapsed amid reckless youthful habits and problems tied to drug use. In the middle of the 2010s they formed Life, placing Mez on vocals, Mick on guitar, Stewart Baxter behind the drums, and Loz Etheridge on bass. Their first album, Popular Music, arrived in 2017 as a self-released effort that generated notice and forward motion thanks to airplay on mainstream radio stations plus reliable opening slots for acts such as Idles, whom the band encountered by chance in a hotel lobby and quickly befriended. Once the debut cycle ended, Etheridge exited and Lydia Palmeira stepped in on bass. Shortly afterward the group joined the Afghan Moon roster, which issued their follow-up, A Picture of Good Health, in 2019.
