Cited as a key catalyst in the emergence of the ultra-bleak black metal offshoot known as depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM), Lifelover came together in Stockholm, Sweden, during 2005 at the hands of Jonas Bergqvist and Kim Carlsson. The deliberately ironic moniker Lifelover originated when Bergqvist heard the phrase directed at him by someone he deeply despised. Lifelover’s sound wove together strands of post-punk, goth rock, dark ambient, and doom metal, beginning with the release of their first full-length effort, Pulver, on Goatowarex in 2006 and continuing through Erotik in 2007, Konkurs in 2008, and Sjukdom in 2011—the final studio album, which arrived after guitarist and co-founder Bergqvist died from an accidental overdose.
