Tania Montelpare entered the world in Fermo, Le Marche, Italy, on November 11, 1970. Drawn to singing from childhood, she later chose the stage name Lighea after a mythological siren. A 1993 encounter with a local producer prompted her entry in the Festival di Castrocaro—also known as the Festival of New Voices—in nearby Emilia-Romagna. She claimed victory there with the song "Siamo Noi Quelli Sbagliati" and placed in the Top Ten of the San Remo Festival's "New Artists" section the same year. Her debut album Non Siamo Eroi appeared in 1994, followed by Lighea in 1995 and Impara a Dire No in 1996. Throughout the following decade she appeared in several musicals and recorded alongside other artists, among them Gaetano Curreri, before resuming her solo work with the 2006 release Tania.
