Biography
Hailing from New York, Lightning Bug merges shoegaze textures, ethereal production values, and dreamy electronics into a style that echoes the early 4AD catalog while simultaneously imparting a futuristic sheen. Fronted by vocalist and chief songwriter Audrey Kang, the group operated under the radar for several years, issuing material in relative anonymity until the wider attention generated by their 2019 album October Song and its 2021 successor A Color of the Sky.
Sometime around 2014, Kang established Lightning Bug in New York and recruited friends Kevin Copeland and Logan Miley to expand her drifting dream-pop compositions. The project first appeared publicly in January 2015 through a handful of tracks shared online, followed almost at once by the understated issuance of the debut album Floaters. Though introduced modestly, the record cultivated a devoted audience and favorable notices, which in turn prompted several live performances in the U.K. Two years afterward the band issued the four-song EP the torment of love. Following an extended period of understated output and limited visibility, Lightning Bug reached a broader listenership with the striking 2019 album October Song, whose favorable critical response surpassed the group’s earlier reach. Initially put out on the small indie imprint Marbled Arm, the album gained wider distribution once Lightning Bug aligned with Fat Possum Records, which began the partnership by reissuing the record. Ahead of that re-release the band unveiled the new single “The Only Ones” in March of 2020, drawn from leftover October Song sessions. For their third album the musicians assembled a makeshift home studio and broadened the lineup beyond the original trio by incorporating contributions from Dane Hagen and Vincent Puleo. The resulting album, A Color of the Sky, appeared in June of 2021.
