Lightsum, the Korean pop group celebrated for its frothy and energetic style of dance-focused pop, first emerged in 2021 via the single “Vanilla” and followed with the EP Into the Light the next year. Cube Entertainment assembled the octet in Seoul during 2021, uniting leader and main vocalist Juhyeon with lead dancer and rapper Sangah, main vocalist Chowon, main vocalist and lead dancer Nayoung, sub-vocalist Hina, sub-vocalist Yujeong, sub-vocalist Huiyeon, and sub-vocalist, rapper, and maknae Jian. Before entering the lineup, Juhyeon placed twenty-fifth on the 2017 competition The Unit: Idol Rebooting Project and later appeared on 2018’s Dancing High, while Chowon, Nayoung, and Yujeong each took part in that year’s Produce 48. The act launched its career with the June 2021 release “Vanilla,” which climbed to number twelve on Korean charts, then issued the follow-up singles package Light a Wish that October; the collection spotlighted “Vivace” and peaked at number seven on the Gaon Chart. Into the Light, Lightsum’s inaugural full EP, arrived in May 2022 and reached number thirteen domestically, propelled by lead track “Alive.”
