This MC emerged from the No Limit Records roster after logging time on the Northern California hip-hop circuit and ultimately securing a deal with Master P’s far-reaching imprint. Years spent based in Richmond fostered a connection with Master P himself and led to guest spots on records by the region’s noted figure E-40. The pact with No Limit—the era’s leading rap label—delivered broad commercial reach while enforcing the stylistic restrictions shared by every act on the roster. On Top Of Da World surfaced in August 1999, stocked with the label’s customary lineup of guests that included Snoop Doggy Dogg and Mystikal, the latter shining on the standout cut “We Ain’t Hard 2 Find,” plus C-Murder, Mia X, and Silkk The Shocker. Lil Italy’s aggressive flow carried the evident imprint of New York’s DMX, although the force of his vocals was undercut by the uninspired G-Funk tracks supplied by in-house producer K-Lou.
