Biography
Little information survives about the female duo Lily & Maria or their lone self-titled album, issued by Columbia in 1968. Keyboards were supplied by the well-known session player Paul Griffin, whose résumé already included numerous prominent folk-rock sessions from the mid- to late ’60s. Collectors seeking an overlooked acid folk rarity—scarce despite its major-label release—may still find interest in this singular effort, although the set feels more like a preliminary sketch, both in production and songwriting, than a finished statement. Elevated rustic vocal blends sit alongside hazy, suggestive lyrics, yet many tracks remain so sparsely arranged that they resemble rough demos. The more elaborately produced numbers, however, layer in spectral, disquieting orchestration alongside electric rock instrumentation, leaving the material balanced between delicate beauty and an undercurrent of unease.
