Discovered and mentored among many others by Chicago radio personality John Lair, Lily May Ledford excelled as a banjoist and fiddler while heading the acclaimed female ensemble known as the Coon Creek Girls. Her path to prominence began with a journey from her countryside Kentucky residence to Chicago, where participation in a talent competition led to an invitation to perform on Lair's National Barn Dance broadcast. The disc jockey advised her to maintain an authentic rural persona, rejecting cosmetics and elegant attire in favor of a simpler style. This guidance shaped her portrayal as an unpolished countrywoman leading the Coon Creek Girls, an outfit assembled by Lair following his relocation to Kentucky for the production of a different country radio program. Joining Ledford were her sibling handling guitar duties, along with Esther Koehler on mandolin and Evelyn Lange providing bass. The ensemble quickly captivated audiences and sustained their performances across the Appalachian region over the subsequent twenty years.
