Born on 7 December 1970 in Chiswick, London, England, Belinda Kimberley Layton first gained notice through her featured vocals on Beats International’s single ‘Dub Be Good To Me’. Her mother, a seasoned professional dancer, had earlier staged the choreography for West End revivals of The King And I and The Sound Of Music. Layton’s own album failed to connect with listeners, even its subdued reading of Janet Kay’s ‘Silly Games’ unable to lift the project. The decision to adopt an MOR club aesthetic did little to strengthen the otherwise slender material, despite the continued involvement of former bandmate Norman Cook and Jolly Harris Jolly behind the scenes. She subsequently teamed with Steve P for recordings under the big beat project Hardknox.
