Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1980, Lindsay Fuller built a devoted audience with compositions that craft elaborate narratives drawn from life’s darker misfortunes, paired with her commanding and deeply expressive singing voice. A former professional football player served as her father, while her mother worked as both an artist and a dressmaker. She picked up guitar at eight, and at twelve an encounter with Bob Dylan and the Indigo Girls at summer camp ignited her interest in songwriting. Her upbringing in the deep South and engagement with its literature left a lasting mark on her lyric writing, and the loss of a close friend when she turned twenty-three awakened the preoccupation with mortality that runs through her material.

After a period in Oregon she shifted to the Pacific Northwest, establishing herself in Seattle, Washington, in 2003. There she launched her professional music career, putting together Lindsay Fuller & the Cheap Dates with guitarist Jeff Fielder and bassist Rebecca Young at its core; Mark Pickerel, once of the Screaming Trees, and Johnny Sangster joined the lineup for frequent appearances. The group delivered its self-titled debut album in 2009, then followed with The Last Light I See in 2010.

While preparing songs for a third release, Fuller sent a demo to Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls; the same day the disc reached Ray, a mutual acquaintance who had attended one of Fuller’s shows urged Ray to check her out. Ray responded with enthusiasm and arranged several opening slots for Fuller on Indigo Girls dates in 2011. Dave Matthews likewise took note, placing her on multiple multi-artist bills alongside him and signing her to his ATO Records imprint. Producer Paul Bryan gathered a small studio ensemble—Chris Bruce on electric guitar, Jebin Bruni on keyboards, Jay Bellerose on drums, and Bryan himself on bass—to cut You, Anniversary in three days; the album appeared in spring 2012.
