Lindsay Pagano, a Philadelphia teenager, earned the nickname "the AOL Girl" when an AOL television spot featured adolescents inquiring about her music long before any album reached stores, mirroring how the 1920s spotlighted "the It Girl." The modern label carried concrete advantages through the internet provider's massive reach and its connection to Time Warner, granting her visibility far beyond what the earlier phrase alone could achieve for an emerging performer. Her debut album, Love, Faith & Inspiration, arrived in November 2001, yet months earlier the single "Everything U R" had already circulated on radio, Reebok had secured her for an endorsement campaign, and the WB network had adopted the track as the theme for its sitcom Maybe It's Me. The same song also landed on the American Pie 2 soundtrack. Even amid these placements, she scored a notable musical achievement by duetting with Paul McCartney on "So Bad," the ballad he wrote; he laid down his vocals as a surprise for her.

Pagano, herself a songwriter, grew up in a home filled with music—her father on bass, her mother singing. As a child she imitated Mariah Carey and Guns n' Roses so avidly that she insisted on being called Axl Rose, while also absorbing the styles of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Whitney Houston. Her entry into the industry began at a thirteenth-birthday gathering in her Philadelphia residence, where veteran songwriter Pat Bunch heard her perform and resolved to connect her with industry professionals. Bunch passed a video of Pagano to Jude Cole, who was struck at once, particularly by her rendition of "Respect." The two soon recorded a demo together, leading Warner Bros. Records to sign her in 2000.
