Biography
Linea Aspera fuse icy yet deeply felt synth pop, threading lyrics of yearning and craving through scientific metaphors. Hailing from London, the pair issued their self-titled debut LP in 2012, swiftly earning a devoted place among the leading acts of the minimal wave resurgence. Following a split during which both members pursued separate endeavors, they regrouped years later to unveil a more expansive follow-up record in 2020.
Australian vocalist and songwriter Alison Lewis joined forces with analog-synth operator and programmer Ryan Ambridge to launch the project in November 2011, drawing from vintage EBM and synth pop while incorporating noise and industrial textures. That same year the duo put out a pair of cassette EPs that quickly circulated through favorable underground chatter. Dark Entries, the San Francisco imprint, issued the debut full-length Linea Aspera in September, while the German label No Emb Blanc handled its compact-disc edition. After the act dissolved in 2013, Lewis teamed with Schwefelgelb’s Jonas Förster, performing as Sid Lamar in the duo Keluar and settling in Berlin; she also issued solo work and performed as a DJ under the name Zoé Zanias, in addition to contributing to the veteran industrial outfit Black Rain on their 2014 album Dark Pool.
Interest in Linea Aspera’s catalog kept expanding, elevating the first album to one of Dark Entries’ strongest commercial successes. In 2019 the label compiled Preservation Bias, gathering material from the two early cassettes plus a cut originally featured on a 2013 anthology of London synth artists. The pair confirmed their return with a handful of concerts, after which the self-released Linea Aspera LP II appeared in September 2020.
