In 1983 the British hard rock quartet Lion assembled after Kal Swan, formerly Tytan’s vocalist, left London for Los Angeles. There he linked up with drummer Mark Edwards, who had just finished a stint in Steeler alongside guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen. Once demo work began, Swan and Edwards added guitarist Doug Aldrich and Jerry Best, the onetime Mansfield bassist, thereby completing the lineup. The band’s first appearance on record came in 1984 with the song “Love Is a Lie,” placed on the Friday the 13th Part 4 soundtrack. Two years later they issued Power Love, a six-song EP available only in Japan. After supplying the title theme for the Transformers animated film, they signed with Scotti Brothers and delivered their debut full-length album, Dangerous Attraction, in 1987. Trouble in Angel City appeared on the Grand Slam label in 1989, yet that September Edwards fractured his neck when he fell from a cliff during a motorcycle race. Lion dissolved the following month, though Swan and Aldrich subsequently formed Bad Moon Rising; Aldrich went on to play with both Dio and Whitesnake.
