Born on May 28, 1955, Danish singer/songwriter Lis Sørensen drew on her classical training to achieve widespread acclaim throughout her native Denmark, where she ranks among the nation’s most enduring and beloved performers. She first appeared in the public eye as a youthful member of the girl group the Five, whose recordings found an audience as the 1960s transitioned into the 1970s. Following the group’s breakup, Sørensen enrolled in formal classical studies during the early 1970s and, in 1974, became a founding vocalist with the pop/rock outfit Shit & Chanel. The ensemble issued four albums before splitting in 1979. Sørensen next joined the Anne Linnet Band, contributing to three of its releases between 1980 and 1982. She stepped out as a solo artist in 1983 with the release of her debut album. Over the ensuing two decades and beyond, she maintained a steady run of chart successes that cemented her status as a national household name, ultimately issuing more than ten albums that encompassed both live recordings and two compilation sets. The 2007 two-CD retrospective The Greatest Songs registered as one of her strongest commercial achievements.
