Biography
Born on 6 November 1962 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, USA, Hindmarsh grew up immersed in music because her father Barry Hindmarsh performed on Hammond B-3 throughout the Pittsburgh region and maintained a substantial record collection. Classical voice lessons began for her at age 13, although her earliest tastes centered on contemporary pop laced with jazz and Latin elements. She launched her professional path in 1978 by performing with the Pittsburgh band Sound Judgment, then joined the Cleveland duo Two Hot during the early 80s. After intensive study she earned honours as a Bachelor of Music in Voice from West Virginia University and later obtained a Master of Music in Voice from Marshall University. Returning to Pittsburgh, she established herself as a soloist with multiple choral ensembles and at several local churches.
Hindmarsh joined the a cappella quintet InVoice in 1993 and remained with the group through 2001. The previous year she issued her first solo album, Now I Know. Throughout the early 00s she maintained an active role in church music, most prominently as soloist at Pittsburgh’s Westminster Presbyterian Church, while also serving as singer and keyboard player in assorted local ensembles, among them Grappa, which she recorded with in 2003. Her self-produced album Lost In A Summer Night appeared on her own Orchard Records, as had its predecessor, and earned substantial praise from both critics and listeners. Technically accomplished, Hindmarsh draws on an expansive repertoire that regularly demonstrates her capacity to forge an emotional connection with audiences.
