Lisa Marr, a bassist, vocalist, and songwriter, has shaped her path through wide-ranging artistic choices, first collaborating with cuddle-core favorites Cub and garage-flavored punk-popsters Buck before establishing her own direction with the alt-country influenced quintet The Lisa Marr Experiment. Born in Canada, she honed her abilities in Vancouver, British Columbia, after linking up with Cub in 1992 upon meeting Robynn Iwata and Valeria Fellini at a shared college radio station. Cub’s cheerful pop-punk sound built a substantial audience across Canada and the United States. The group separated on friendly terms in 1997, prompting Marr to relocate to Los Angeles, California, where she promptly formed Buck alongside percussionist Lisa G.—who had drummed in a later Cub configuration—and guitarist Pepper Berry. Over their two-year run, Buck cultivated a devoted regional following in California while cycling through several drummers before disbanding in 2000. Consistent with her pattern, Marr turned next to The Lisa Marr Experiment, which tempered the punk energy of her prior work in favor of a style shaped by country music’s high and lonesome approach. Alongside multi-instrumentalist Mike Flanagan, drummer Sherri Solinger—who had performed with Buck—and steel guitarist Freddie Karl Sablan, Jr., Marr and the group issued their first album, 4 AM, in 2000; a track from that release was later interpreted by Canadian alt-country sensation Neko Case, who had briefly participated in one of Cub’s subsequent lineups. In 2003 the ensemble delivered its follow-up, American Jitters, expanding to a five-piece with the addition of guitarist Mart Beal. Privately, Marr is wed to bassist Ronnie Barnett of L.A. pop-punkers The Muffs.
