Lisa Mednick’s path through music began with classical piano lessons at the age of seven. She kept at her studies until leaving college, after which she relocated from Ann Arbor, Michigan, first to Washington, D.C., and then on to New York City. In that city she started her initial group, Pop Decay, and contributed to a Half Japanese recording. An audition for Joe Jackson prompted her return to the Howard University Music Conservatory in Washington, D.C., where she focused on jazz. Additional instruction came from John Malachi, and in 1984 she shifted to New Orleans to work with Charles Neville. While there she provided support for Earl King, became a member of the Song Dogs, and later headed to Austin, where she and Bill Conley created the acoustic duo Ship of Fools. Subsequent work included performances alongside Alejandro Escovedo’s Orchestra and both recording and touring dates with the Chills during their Soft Bomb outing. Another tour, this time with Michelle Shocked, preceded the formation of Friendly Fire. Her debut solo release, Artifacts of Love, appeared on DejaDisc.
