In 2007 Lisa O'Kane emerged as a rising talent within the American country scene upon issuing her album It Don't Hurt. Although born and raised in California, her powerful yet polished vocal approach had already secured a devoted audience across Europe and the United Kingdom long before domestic recognition arrived. Born in Fish Camp, California—a remote settlement inside Yosemite National Forest home to fewer than forty residents—she absorbed an eclectic mix of radio broadcasts alongside her family during childhood and nurtured an early desire to perform. At her grandfather’s urging she took up violin in fourth grade, later switching to keyboards after her family purchased a used piano for $150. While enrolled at a high school in Fresno, California, she rose to concert mistress of the local Junior Philharmonic Orchestra and displayed her vocal ability through membership in the California Girls’ Choir.

Despite evident musical gifts, she placed career and family ahead of artistic pursuits, setting those ambitions aside until an impromptu invitation from a neighborhood bar band allowed her to perform publicly again on her birthday. Enthralled by the experience, she began performing locally, which led record producer Edward Tree to notice her voice. With his assistance she cut her first album, Am I Too Blue, in 2002; overseas audiences embraced the release, prompting promoters to book tours through France, Spain, and the Netherlands. Veteran BBC broadcaster Bob Harris, longtime host of The Old Grey Whistle Test, became an admirer, and her follow-up album Peace of Mind, issued in 2004, garnered strong critical notice together with robust sales in England.

In 2007 she entered a recording agreement with the Universal-distributed New Light Entertainment imprint, positioning her third album It Don't Hurt to deliver comparable success on American shores to the acclaim she had long enjoyed abroad.
