Little Pieces arose from the collaboration between vocalist and guitarist Herman Jolly, the frontman for Sunset Valley, and the rhythm section formed by bassist Grant Badger and drummer Rob Lloyd. Both Badger and Lloyd grew up in Illinois and first connected while attending the University of Illinois in Champaign, where they performed together in the group Bantha. Following a period based in Chicago, the pair shifted to Seattle and began working as the duo Guitar Defamation League. They also supported labelmate Chris Mills, whose association with Sunset Valley brought them into contact with Jolly. In 2006, after relocating from Montana to Seattle, Jolly sought musicians to back his performances promoting the third solo album Bunker Life and reached out to Badger and Lloyd. The resulting concerts proved strong enough that the three headed into Jackpot Studio in Portland, OR, to lay down tracks as a collective project. They chose the name Little Pieces for the ensemble and applied it as well to the album, which One Eleven Records issued on June 3, 2008.
